About this deal

I haven’t gone through those yet (although I do own the second one), so I won’t talk too much about them here unless I feel it’s necessary. The most useful bit might be that this volume contains definitions and explanations for everyone's favorite particles: wa, ga, o, ni, and e. What I’ve heard from other people who own all three is that the beginner book is the essential one to get, and that you probably only need the other two if you’re planning on taking the N1 or N2 of the JLPT.

What’s more, this book includes a lot of practice sections to allow the reader to test his or her understanding of the lesson.

The same cannot be said for the mystifying section on viewpoint, which while clarifying the thought behind the mechanics of the various giving/receiving verbs, also offered a bunch of perspective rules, all of which you could break if you were writing fiction in English, and I assume in Japanese as well. Overall, one of the best Japanese grammar books if you want to pursue more difficult concepts in the future. When it comes to understanding a grammar point you've learned or tried to learn, they're the best, hands down. One of the smallest Japanese grammar books out there, this one covers parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation, idioms, and even advice on pronunciation.
