About this deal

Normaal gesproken komt Jane altijd met een heel sterk plot, maar dat ontbrak deze keer voor mijn gevoel.

It is set in London, in rich areas and the characters are different, relatable (in a way) and absorbing. I found it a bit hard to swallow that Joni was on her high horse about Ant lying when she herself had used pictures of her sister on her online profile, then followed (stalked. Some characters’ decisions had me baffled but it just proved how gullible and naive some women can be. She’s so nervous that she posts fake photos – but when she starts talking to Ant, who’s desperate to meet her, she doesn’t dare come clean. The three main characters are so different but equally likeable, and I think lots of readers will relate to them in many ways.It was great to read a story about romance and friendship in women who were not in their 20s for a change.

Whilst I did love their friendship, I found the last 10-15% of the book unnecessary and dragged out. Ant seems like a rich businessman who is going through a divorce, but the more they spend time together, Joni realises that something is wrong. How this book made me feel: I am a big fan of Jane Fallon books, I enjoy the drama and intrigue that these books bring, and this one is no exception. Als ze contact legt met de andere vrouwen met wie hij afspreekt, Saff en Mary, besluiten de drie het er niet bij te laten zitten en beramen een plan. I throughly enjoyed this book, a total easy read which I would look forward to ‘tucking into’ before bed every night. The plot is fresh, fun and timely with so many people turning to online dating apps and watching programmes like The Tinder Swindler on Netflix. More than anything though, I think I just found Joni and her life really relatable, and I enjoyed all the details of her life, her flat, her job and her love of the gym.

There were some parts I appreciated, like when Joni forms a connection with the other women that Ant is seeing. Full of charm, excitement and the humour splashed throughout adds this certain charisma that makes it so relatable. The story is told from Joni’s perspective mostly, she is the one who is trying to expose what Ant is up to. When happily divorced Joni is reluctantly talked into joining a dating app, she is surprised to quickly hit it off with Ant.I didn’t relate to our main character Joni at all and as lovely as I think she probably was, I just didn’t like her or care for her that much. The embedded message about women finding happiness through friendships, no men involved, spoke volumes to me.
